What is Sciatica?

Sciatica usually occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated. Your sciatic nerve begins in your lower back, travels down each buttock, and into your legs. When there's pressure or irritation anywhere on the sciatic nerve, you will have sciatica symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

The most common symptom of sciatica is lower back pain. The pain may be constant or come and go. It may be worse if you sit or stand for a long period of time. In addition to back pain, you may have leg pain or pain in your hips or buttocks. Along with pain, you may experience burning, tingling, and numbness in your legs or feet. Feeling weakness in your legs and difficulty walking are also common symptoms.

Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica

Your chiropractor can treat sciatica in several ways. Chiropractic care focuses on treating the underlying cause of your pain rather than simply treating symptoms. This can give you long-lasting relief and better overall health. Your chiropractor will begin by making a diagnosis. They will perform a physical exam and discuss your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle. Once they've identified your problem areas, they will create a treatment plan.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Spinal misalignment is a common cause of sciatica. If your spine is out of alignment, this can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing pain. Chiropractic adjustment corrects spinal misalignment. In addition to relieving your pain, proper alignment can reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, and improve nervous system function.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression is also effective. If your sciatica is caused by a bulging or herniated disc, spinal decompression can allow the disc to go back to its natural position, relieving the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Spinal decompression can also relieve muscle tension in your back and allow increased blood flow, which can speed up healing. During spinal decompression, you'll lie on a specialized table that makes precise movements to gently stretch your spine and create negative pressure.

Therapeutic Exercises

Therapeutic exercises are also beneficial. These exercises will increase your flexibility and relieve pain. Your chiropractor will teach you how to do these exercises, and you'll continue them at home.
